Schools learn to swim

Our schools learn to swim programme runs at all five of our pools across the district.

Lessons are taught by our friendly and Swim England-qualified instructors and we follow the Learn to Swim framework. We support swimmers of all abilities, from someone who has never been in the water all the way to an advanced level of skill.

The majority of schools within the programme are at primary level but the programme also caters for pre-school nursery groups and secondary schools.

Activities are not just based on structured swimming lessons which are why general lifesaving skills are an integral part of the scheme.

Towards the end of a block of lessons, pupils will be assessed against certain criteria and awarded badge slips to mark their progress and achievement. Awards and certificates can be purchased once a badge slip has been presented.

The pinnacle of the scheme is the opportunity to take part in formal swimming galas. These culminate in the Harrogate district grand final swimming gala at the Hydro.
