Become a swimming teacher

Children swimming

SEQ Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching) is a practical qualification, giving you the skills needed to support a swimming teacher.

To take part, you'll need to be 16 or older on the first day of the course.

Successful completion of the qualification will allow learners to assist a qualified Level 2 Swimming Teacher in delivering high-quality inclusive swimming lessons at a leisure centre, swim school or club learn to swim programme.

Assessment is made up of a series of component parts:

  • theoretical questions
  • observation record
  • review record

SEQ Level 2 Teaching Swimming qualification builds on the Level 1 qualification. You'll learn how to effectively plan, prepare, deliver and evaluate a series of swimming lessons independently. It will also give you the confidence to support swimmers with special needs and disabilities (SEND).

To take part, you'll need to be 16 or older on the first day of the course. You'll also need to hold an SEQ Level 1 Swimming Assistant (Teaching) or a Swim England Level 1 Award in teaching aquatics or an equivalent Swim England qualification certified after 1994.

Assessment is made up of a series of component parts:

  • theoretical questions (please note these questions will change during the life of the qualification)
  • observation record
  • action plan
  • lesson plan
  • evaluation
  • overview of a series of lessons

We don't currently run swimming coaching courses. However, if you are interested in the coaching programme in a competitive environment, the Institute of Swimming (IOS) is the route to becoming a swimming coach.
